Welcome to the Pet Photography

Leading Lines

Leading lines are used to direct the viewer’s eye to the subject of the photograph. Leading lines commonly converge at the point of the subject, for example along a path or river. In the first image, the line leads from two edges directly toward the runner and the dog so the viewer automatically focuses on these subjects.

The next image uses a tree to create leading lines to Hilary.

The image below illustrates a more subtle use of leading lines, from the dog’s tail, back, leash and legs toward his eyes, which is the desired focal point of this image.

Love that third image.  Very expressive face on what I am assuming is a shelter pup. Leading lines are everywhere, aren’t they?  We just have to look for them.ReplyCancel

Thanks, Linda. I took him for a walk near the shelter yesterday and thought this could help him find a loving home.ReplyCancel

Ah, I like that you pointed out how the eyes can add to the leading lines of an image. I didn’t think to mention that, but it’s so effective!ReplyCancel

I’d not thought of using a dog’s tail as a leading line. Good one!ReplyCancel

It seems crazy but when I looked at the image, his tail led me right to his face. I shot this yesterday for the shelter. Thanks!
